The events of Taking Fire! Memoir of an Aerial Scout in Vietnam took place around fifty years ago when the war in Vietnam was at its very peak in violence and intensity. The memoir is the very personal story of a young SDSU grad only recently removed from the Brookings campus who was thrust into a remarkable, although perilous method of fighting the deadly Viet Cong called Hunter-Killer operations. The tactic was extraordinarily successful, but included significant dangers to those involved. Few today are aware of the tactic or of the men who made it work. Porter’s vivid memoir tells the story through recounts of the internal workings of a legendary air cavalry troop, in-the-cockpit combat actions, and the men who were key players in these dangerous combat operations. Mr. Porter’s work is available at all fine book sellers nationally.
